Constipation

Constipation and Evacuatory Disorders

Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in America. Though it can affect all ages and genders, it is most common in women, children, and those age 65 and older. Women often complain of constipation during pregnancy and after child birth.

Constipation means that your normal bowel movements have become irregular. You may feel bloated and uncomfortable. The stool you pass may be hard, dry and painful to get rid of.

Constipation is caused by a number of things, the most common are listed below:
-not enough fiber
-not enough liquids
-not enough exercise
-drug use, antidepressants, and iron pills
-irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
-pregnancy or travel (and other significant lifestyle changes)
-laxative abuse
-disorders such as multiple sclerosis or underactive thyroid gland
-colon cancer or diverticulosis

Constipation can be treated with dietary changes and exercise. If you think that your constipation is being caused by something much more dangerous (i.e. cancer, diverticulitis) then you should see your physician and schedule a colonscopy.
